Palazzo Farnese is one of the most beautiful and important buildings in Rome. Anticamente considerato una delle “quattro meraviglie di Roma”, è un gioiello architettonico che custodisce straordinarie opere d’arte.
Commissioned in 1513 by Alessandro Farnese (1468-1549), the future Pope Paul III, and completed in 1589, it was built under the direction of four great architects-Sangallo the Younger, Michelangelo, the Vignola Giacomo Della Porta.
Among the masterpieces of Palazzo Farnese that will be on view during the guided tour is the world-famous Galleria Carracci, created between 1597 and 1608 by the brothers Annibale and Agostino Carracci, exponents of the new 16th-century classicism: a magnificent 20-meter vault frescoed with mythological subjects from Ovid’s Metamorphoses.
Gli affreschi, tra giochi ottici e prospettici, sovrappongono scultura, pittura e architettura, in un trionfo di luce, forme e colori che da oltre quattrocento anni stupiscono e affascinano gli osservatori.
La galleria di Palazzo Farnese, decorata principalmente da Annibale, è considerata ancora oggi il suo capolavoro e costituisce la più perfetta conclusione di un secolo e mezzo d’innovazioni pittoriche in Europa, prima della nascita delle grandi correnti artistiche del Seicento.
Tra gli altri capolavori di Palazzo Farnese, il Salone d’Ercole con arazzi del XVII secolo, i sarcofagi ornati di scene mitologiche e sormontati da sculture di navi da guerra romane, la Galleria di Murano, il Camerino anch’esso meravigliosamente affrescato da Annibale Caracci.

Dal 1874 il Palazzo è sede dell’Ambasciata di Francia e dall’anno successivo anche dell’École française de Rome, istituto di ricerca e biblioteca.
